Oh Canadaaa!

Daily writing prompt
What’s the longest trip you’ve ever taken?

In 2001, I visited Montreal Canada with my schoolmates. We were there for nearly a week. Most of my recent trips last 3 days.

A trip I took to VA years ago was close. Since I was paying for the hotel, my aunt assumed it would be just fine to take 2 additional days to “rest up” before returning home. And I wasn’t just paying for her and I, I was also covering her son… She claimed she would pay me back, but then backtracked and said I had a job…

And you know what?

The entire drive back, I made a solemn vow to never ever travel with her again.

Waking me up at 4AM after keeping me up past midnight.

Why?

Because instead of ordering a meal to-go and eating it in the hotel room, she wanted to experience eating at a restaurant late into the night, then coming back and having the TV blasting at 12AM. Then would wake us up at 4AM since my cousin took 10,000 years in the bathroom.

She delayed me twice, and I missed the continental breakfast.

She said Waffle House was better.

I told her “continental is free.”

And so when another trip came up, I shut it down and made plans to go without her.

She asked how she would be able to afford it. I told her to start saving up money instead of blowing it on gadgets she didn’t need.

That Montreal trip was in April, prior to 9/11, so I didn’t need a passport. I had someone claim that my account wasn’t accurate. And I told them: “Wow! I had no clue that you were up there with me as well! Seeing as I never had a passport until 2019, what does that tell you?!”

I also learned how much I hated horse-drawn carriages. They stink like no one’s business.

I also learned I enjoyed dinner theater–and that some boys are crass. We had a student in the bus next to ours pull his underwear down and moon us.
