Insert excessive laughter.
I was in the food industry and was able to watch as people were abruptly replaced with machines. Self-checkout lanes are only useful for people who understand how to use them. These devices are far more accident prone and significantly slower than a human being ever would be.
Thieves enjoy self-checkout because these machines can be easily fooled.
There’s also an uncomfortable coldness to them.
You can’t ask the register how its day is or even be greeted normally by it. And after you’re done paying, it hurries you along or acts as if you’re a brand new customer.
