I had a very influential teacher when I was in the 7th grade. One of the main things I remember was her informing us that the world revolved around money and sex.
She also told us that we were very lucky to have been born in the United States, telling us about the atrocities that children in other countries faced.
This was in the 90s. Things are far worse now.
What I learned about the world was eye-opening and has lingered in the back of my mind. I do not pity people born in other countries, but when I read or hear about the horrors they face… I think about what she said.
What I learned to hate was the fact that so many people suffer because of the actions of the few.
It wasn’t “luck” to be born in the US. It was coincidence. The United States had its own share of problems, but it’s the only home I know.
I try not to focus on politics at all. It helps me keep an open and even mind when I’m out.
And speaking as a person who used to be racist and yes, I was, I don’t want anyone or anyTHING tainting or miscoloring my views of others.
And that is all. I’m intentionally not sharing her full name on here.
