Can’t Recall

Daily writing prompt
Who was your most influential teacher? Why?

Sadly, my most influential teacher was my English 2 professor in college.

Unfortunately, I don’t remember her name at all, but I knew she was hard as nails.

My class started with 32 students and by the time it was over, there were only six of us. I had a C+, which was the highest score in that class.

I was very impressed by her wit, and it’s with such memories in mind that I now use a red pen to correct things.

  1. It’s amazing how a teacher’s impact can stay with you, even without remembering their name. The rigor and high standards set by your English professor clearly shaped your approach to learning and correcting work. The fact that only six students remained by the end of the class highlights the tough but effective nature of her teaching. It’s a testament to how tough love can push students to achieve more. Your use of a red pen as a reminder of her influence is a beautiful way to carry her lessons with you. Very reflective and insightful!

    1. She had a really simple method to find people who plagiarized in her class too. She gave us a sample paper and asked us to write something similar as an introduction.

One of my classmates read out his ‘intro,’ before turning it in but it was nearly verbatim, minus words he added in… referring to himself.

She told him “Great Job!” I locked eyes with some of the other students who were horrified. This was an older woman, possibly in her late 60s, early 70s.

So we’re thinking… old age… right? Maybe she didn’t notice??

After that class, we never saw him again.

I don’t know why he thought plagiarism was the way to succeed. It’s the way to get expelled out the college.

I did have one instance where I stumped her though. She asked about a website that wasn’t listed in my bibliography. I told her that my source was listed and pointed it out on the sheet. It was a book. She was stunned. I went to the library and checked out a book there because all of the website article options we had on campus were too short and too confusing for me.

Too few words can cause more problems than too many.

I swear… that entire semester, it felt like we were working on draft after draft after draft for the same paper. First draft and bibliography. Secondary draft and draft of the bibliography. Third draft and secondary draft of the bibliography.

Additional research. More information added to the paper. Back to the ‘drafting’ board.

Makes me want to retrain myself, so I can re-learn what I’ve forgotten. So I can at least better understand why and how I write the way I do.

Really wish I remembered her name. She was so cool!
